Evidence of Absence

Conté crayon on rough watercolour paper, 2011 – 2016 Drawings inspired by Marcel Proust’s thought that memories are like forgotten negatives. When triggered by the senses (or the developer) they appear to the light and can be seen again. The process of ‘re-drawing’ my old negatives using tiny lines and hatching on rough water – colour paper is time-consuming, but evoke the random structure of film grain. The finished drawing is photographed and then ‘re-turned’ into a positive with a mouse click in Photoshop. Finally the digital file is printed as an edition of Giclée Prints. I was interested in opposites: original and edition, slow versus fast, positive and negative, analogue and digital.
